They had the volunteers "drain" color from the rectangle and add to the grey rectangle. This shows those were hallucinations. I think this is comparable because our mind shows us what we want to be shown. If we are told something our mind thinks its true, and if it is not, our mind tries to make it true. There is a missed transition in a sequence of events, such as the the quick altering of a picture, and to make up for that which could not be perceived, our mind offers a suggestion. As this suggestion is universal, one would have to imagine the brain has a preconceived notion as to how the world works, or ,rather, more likely a learned notion. Perhaps the brain has been trained through daily observation of the world's workings what to expect out of our environment. Would a mind exposed to a world with starkly different patterns of motion and images experience the same optical illusion?George Crosbynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217817228764059649.post-17003338428125900052013-05-08T11:02:09.571-07:002013-05-08T11:02:09.571-07:00This is cool!

I meant that in comparison with dialysis, a transplant restores kidney function and the symptoms of the disease are (mostly) 'cured'. But certainly from the point of view of the patient and given that transplanted kidneys have a limited life-time, kidney transplants are a treatment, not a cure. Thanks for clearing that out. This research is promising, and even though it might take many years until it reaches the clinical setting, in principle it should work with humans (we hope it will).
Best wishes,
IsabelIsabel Torreshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00724636726605405730noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217817228764059649.post-69370750761871750172013-04-19T08:35:55.060-07:002013-04-19T08:35:55.060-07:00My brother recently started receiving treatment f...My brother recently started receiving treatment for scoliosis, so I find myself reading up on it a lot lately. As someon...Thanks for posting about this research. As someone about to receive a second kidney transplant, I wanted to clarify that kidney transplants do not actually cure kidney failure. Rather, they are considered a form of treatment, much like dialysis only much better for the patient (provided the patient can deal with the side effects of the immunosuppressant medications). Further, people with kidney transplants (or any transplant for that matter) take medication for the life of the organ, not the rest of their lives (although that's the hope if you get a transplant!). In the case of kidney transplants, cadaveric kidneys last on average 10-12 years while living related donated kidneys last an average of 15 years. Some last much longer, some much shorter than that. Many of us with chronic kidney disease and kidney failure are looking with hope at the kind of research you reported here. Thank you.

Kind regards,
Allison KAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6217817228764059649.post-58644456572452556742013-03-22T03:11:59.507-07:002013-03-22T03:11:59.507-07:00Fascinating! The more places that have smoking banned, means the more other places will start to ban smoking too. Places that do not have smoking banned will look around to all of the places that do and that's when "Conformity" will come into place. Conformity is adjusting your opinions or judgments so that it matches those of other people, or the norms of a social group or situation. Seeing all of the other places that have smoking banned will cause the places that dont have it banned wanting to conform and be part of the "norm" and so they will ban smoking there too. The more places with banned smoking, the less people will actually be smoking, causing less people to get diseases from smoking, and causing less people to die from smoking. Conformity can be a big role in the attempt to reduce the deaths from smoking, because people do not want to be different or feel out of place, so if smoking is banned, they will not want to smoke because they do not want to be the only ones doing it and feel different or left out.

Michael Timmermannnoreply@blogger.com
